The Red Tower was built in 1490 by order of Henry VII. Controversially, the job of building it was given to bricklayers rather than the stonemasons, who resented this arrangement. A bitter feud broke out, which led to the murder of a bricklayer and the trial, for murder, of the wardens of the Masons’ Guild. Only the top two thirds of the Tower are now visible above ground.
