York Guildhall marks the point at which the Romans forded the River Ouse and provided access to the main fortress of Eboracum via a gateway known as the Praetorian Gate. The Guildhall dates from the 15th century, and was a meeting place for all of York’s 96 craft guilds. Oak pillars in the hall were originally taken from the nearby Forest of Galtres. Richard III was entertained there in 1483. Much of the Guildhall was severely damaged in an air raid in 1942, but was rebuilt and opened in 1960.
