Built to house the treasurers of York Minster, the original medieval structure has been largely replaced by the 17th century building that remains today. Treasurers controlled the Minster’s finances and entertained guests, which is why such a grand residence was provided.

The Treasurer’s House Folklore

The Treasurer’s House is home to one of York’s most famous hauntings. On a number of occasions, ghostly Roman legionnaires have been seen in the building’s cellars, marching along the route of the Via Decumana, the fortress’s main east-west axis.

Another tale reports how the Tapestry Room within the house was occupied by a married couple for a while. The husband was repeatedly unfaithful to him wife, who murdered him in a fit of rage. The room is noticeably colder than others, and a phantom woman has been seen sitting on a chair.
