York was one of the few cities in England that had two castles. The first was Clifford’s Tower. The second – the Old Baille – was smaller than the tower on the opposite bank of the River Ouse, but was still built in the motte and bailey style. All that survives today is the motte and part of the embankment now incorporated into the city walls.
