A hidden dungeon was discovered in this pub in 1816, including chains and manacles. White mist has appeared in the bar, and ghostly men and women, perhaps the phantoms of dead prisoners, have been witnessed. A secret tunnel was said to run from the cellar to York Minster, but has never been found. However, the Minster’s own prison was originally located nearby.

I know this is an old post, So I have the following comments. 1. The building is a new build. 2 Its original Names suggest is (previous builds) where also Public Houses (No Mention of these). 3. Very Odd that a Building using or known by “Hole in the Wall” (St Mary and the Holy Angels aka St Sepulchre’s Chapel) that was situated on the North Wall of the Minster Nave and demolished 1816. 4. as for Tunnels, the Ricerty Minster would have fallen with the amount of so called tunnels. So one asks that the older uses of the building Never Found a Cellar and that No investigation as to a “Prison” under the sight of many public houses and the date of Dungeon Found is the same year of the Original “Hole in the Wall” was Demolished. I would suggest the Brewery or Landlord “FULLY investigates” before outlandish Boards are displayed. Thank you.
