A unique non-monastic religious building, St William’s College was named after Archbishop William Fitzherbert, who was canonised in 1227 and became York’s patron saint. The college was founded in the 15th century as a residence for so-called chantry priests, who provided services for the Minster’s many private chapels.

It is also said to be haunted by a ghost, who roams around the college looking for his brother: two brothers planned to rob the priests who lived here, but the attempt ended in disaster. One brother murdered a priest and then his own sibling, for fear that he would confess to the authorities. In a fit of remorse, he hanged himself and his ghost still haunts the building.

The ghost of an elderly woman also sits on the steps at the front of the college, smiling at passers-by.
