A church has stood on this site since the 11th century, although the present building dates from the 15th. St Saviourgate was a fashionable street in Georgian times, but its popularity declined in the Edwardian era, and became a slum district. More recently, the building was acquired by the York Archaeological Trust.
St Saviour St Saviourgate Folklore:
The church is allegedly haunted by the ghost of a pagan Viking warrior, who was skinned alive by Christians here. The hauntings take the form of malevolent poltergeist activity: a ghost hunter allegedly died of fright after spending the night inside the church.
