In 1446 King Henry VI granted a charter which founded the Guild of St Martin. A hall and a chapel were subsequently built on the site of an earlier chapel, dedicated to St Anthony. There is also evidence of Viking usage here. In the 16th century the building was used as a workhouse and a place of correction, and later as a school and a storehouse for munitions. The building consists of two storeys, with walls partly of 15th century stonework and partly of 17th century brick.
