Known as Konungsgarthr or King’s Garth in the 10th century, some have suggested this small square was the site of the royal palace of the Kings of Deira, Northumbria and, later, Norse York.
The raised part of the square is all that now remains of Holy Trinity church, which was located here until 1937, when it was demolished. It had fallen into disrepair in the 19th century and was used as a sheep pen.
