The friary of York’s Franciscan monks, or Grey Friars, was located here, possibly adjacent to Knights Templar land. Founded in approx. 1230, only a stretch of precinct wall now remains. But at its height the friary was palatial, capable of accommodating a visit by Edward III and his 600-strong retinue
