Coppergate was a large urban archaeological excavation, conducted prior to the redevelopment of this part of York, from 1976 to 1981. The dig revealed 2,000 years of history, including Roman roof tiles. More importantly, it uncovered evidence of settlement in Jorvik – Viking York. Remains of timber buildings were found, along with workshops manufacturing jewellery, metalwork, cups and bowls. In all, 40,000 items were revealed, chief of which was the York Helmet – a superbly preserved example of Anglo-Saxon craftsmanship.

Coppergate is now the site of the Jorvik Viking Centre – one of York’s most successful attractions.
