Hidden behind a modern office block façade until the 1980s, the oldest parts of Barley Hall date from 1360, when it was built as a townhouse for Nostell Priory, the monastery near Wakefield in West Yorkshire. A new wing was added in 1430 and shortly after became the home of York’s Lord Mayor, Master William Snawsell. The building has now been restored as a reconstructed medieval townhouse, open to visitors.
