Anglo-Saxon grave cover

A church has been located here since before the Norman Conquest. The minster church, according to legend originally built in 685 AD for St Cuthbert, would have been much larger. An Anglo-Saxon grave cover was found in the church and can still be seen today.

The lantern tower is 15th century, and was built to guide travellers through the dangerous Forest of Galtres, into the city.

A replica of a 12th century door knocker is affixed to the door at the main north entrance. The knocker depicts the Mouth of Hell, with a bizarre beast holding a human head in its mouth.

All Saints Pavement Folklore:

A long-haired woman, dressed in white, has often welcomed mourners at funeral services held at the church. She appears entirely real, solid and alive to those who see her, but she is a ghost; her identity is unknown.
