Believed to be the oldest licensed premises in the York, it consists of a 17th century building sitting on a 10th century cellar. The pub is accessed via a short snickelway, and is allegedly haunted by a pair of black cats.

Phantom black cats have been seen and heard in this ancient pub, along with the cries of wounded Civil War soldiers; the pub’s cellar was used as a makeshift hospital at the time.
